Love for the sport of racing is what fuels the spirit of Della Penna Motorsports – a spirit that continues to drive its rich heritage for nurturing young drives into the future.

An Argentinean-born motor sports enthusiast with a background in aeronautical engineering, John Della Penna began his racing career in 1975, racing Formula Fords, ultimately winning two Formula Atlantic driving championships by 1985.

Della Penna’s experience behind the wheel and technical understanding of automotive performance prepared him to launch his own team in 1990. He started by enlisting his long-time friend, Jimmy Vasser to compete in the Toyota Atlantic Championships and the duo immediately began racking up the wins. Della Penna’s work with Vasser instilled a core philosophy to how he’d operate Della Penna Motorsports: when you give a young, talented driver a fast car and the support he needs, the results will come.

Support is something that Della Penna has given to young drivers in spades, helping to launch the careers of racing champions that include Willy T Ribbs, Jimmy Vasser, Juan Manuel Fangio II, Richie Hearn, Jamie Galles, Memo Gidley, among others. Della Penna Motorsports has most recently raced in the IRL and CART series, winning third place in the 1996 Indianapolis 500, as well as the inaugural Las Vegas 300. Currently, Della Penna Motorsports is active in the Ferrari Challenge Series.

John Della Penna serves as president of the company.

“When I was five years old, I saw five-time world driving champion Juan Fangio compete in the Buenos Aires Formula One Event. At that point, I knew that I wanted to be involved in motor sports”
